Here's the tea... a notary's job has clear limits, and that's actually a good thing.
Here's what I can do as a Louisiana Civil Law Notary:
- Verify your identity using acceptable ID
- Witness your signature and confirm you're signing willingly
- Administer oaths and affirmations
- Prepare and notarize certain authentic acts recognized under Louisiana civil law
And here's what I can't do:
- Give you legal advice
- Tell you which document you need for your situation
- Explain the legal consequences of what you're signing
- Guarantee that a document's contents are true or enforceable
That second list surprises people the most. A notarization confirms that you appeared, were properly identified, and signed of your own free will — it doesn't mean the notary reviewed, approved, or vouched for what's actually written in the document.
Unless a notary is also a licensed attorney, they legally cannot cross into legal advice — even if you ask nicely, even if it seems like a simple question.
The Tea to Remember
Knowing those boundaries protects you and your notary. If you're not sure what document you need, that conversation belongs with a licensed attorney — not your notary appointment.
