Notary Tea With Li — Fraud Prevention
Here's the tea... the best defense against document fraud is preparation, not luck.
Notary fraud and document scams show up in a few common patterns. Being able to spot them protects you, your family, and your finances.
Watch for these red flags:
- Pressure to sign quickly — legitimate notarizations don't require you to rush or skip reading a document
- A "notary" who never checks your ID — identity verification is a required part of the process, not optional
- Anyone claiming a notary seal makes a document automatically "legal" or enforceable — it doesn't
- Requests to notarize a blank or incomplete document — a notary should never notarize a document with blank sections left to fill in later
- Someone offering to sign on your behalf without you present — in almost all cases, the signer must be physically present
Document fraud doesn't always look dramatic. Sometimes it's as simple as someone rushing an elderly relative to sign something without a clear explanation, or a stranger offering to "notarize real quick" without checking ID at all.
The Tea to Remember
Always review documents before signing, protect your identification, and work with trusted, verifiable professionals. A few extra minutes today can prevent major headaches tomorrow.
