Here's the tea... a lot of folks assume a notary is a notary, no matter what state you're in. Not in Louisiana.
Louisiana is the only state in the country that runs on civil law instead of common law — a legal system rooted in French and Spanish colonial history rather than English common law like the other 49 states. That difference shows up in a lot of places, and the notary profession is one of the clearest examples.
In most states, a notary public is a witness. They confirm your identity, watch you sign, and stamp the document. That's about the extent of it.
In Louisiana, a Civil Law Notary holds a role closer to what's found in France, Spain, or Quebec — legal systems that also trace back to civil law traditions. Louisiana notaries can prepare certain legal instruments, such as authentic acts (think: some successions, donations, and matrimonial agreements), that carry legal weight most other states reserve for attorneys.
That doesn't mean a Louisiana notary is an attorney — we're not, and we can't give legal advice. But it does mean the role carries more historical and legal significance here than almost anywhere else in the U.S.
